In its 50-year history, which ended in 2006, the Red Apple Rest and its Red Apple Motel on Route 17 was an oasis for people heading to the resorts and bungalow colonies as well as an escape for musicians getting out the city — comedians, too, staying and trying material before heading up to the hotels. Even Governor Averell Harriman used to send his chauffeur for take-out at the Red Apple. It was an abundant cafeteria style all the way.
