For those who like wordplay, you'll notice that "Nevele" spelled backward is "eleven". Getting its name from the 11 schoolteachers that discovered a waterfall on the premises in the early nineteenth-century, this resort became a getaway for Jewish lawyers, doctors, and accountants coming up from Manhattan. Established in 1901 by Charles Slutsky, the grounds were originally named "Nevele Falls Farm House". In the 1920s and 30s, they added several Mission Revival style wings congruent with the style of other resorts in the area. Â As modernity swept through the Catskills, The Nevele expanded in order to keep up with the fashion of the 1950s and 60s. Â After cycling through several notable architects, The Nevele partnered with Herbert D. Phillips in 1964. With the help of his New York firm, he designed the recognizable ten-story dodecahedron? Nevele Tower. Contrary to the excessive corridor lengths that plagued more traditional Catskill hotels, the tower was nearly circular. The resort had an indoor and outdoor pool, health center, tennis courts, and both an 18-hole and 9-hole golf course. Notable guests were often in and out of The Nevele, including President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966.
