If you spent any time in the Catskills, there is one, small amphibian you are definitely familiar with—the Salamander. Who hasn’t walked near the woods after a rain and not met many salamanders out for a stroll as well?
One of the most famous of legendary and folklore-based species, the salamander had many characteristics attached to it, including being immune to fire! It has had its time in witchcraft, too, but usually under the name of one of its subspecies, the newt.
They are coated with a slimy substance, which is one of their main defenses against predators. That’s why you tend to see frustrated kids trying to scoop them up. They often can’t. Too slippery. It can regenerate lost limbs too.
Maybe you’re like many of us and haven’t seen another salamander since you spent time in the Catskills, but the memories this little yet complex creature elicits always brings out a smile.
